On January 1, 1991, E. Hugh Heck III, more popularly known as "Rem" founded REM's RAILROAD MODELS in the former back bedroom of the Heck residence in Garland, Texas.  Rem had spent most of the preceding 10 years with Texas Instruments as a programmer/analyst and systems manager.  When TI offered to pay people to quit, he decided to take advantage of the offer to realize his dream of self employment.
After visiting several train shows with Linda, the better half of his life, they agreed that there may be an opportunity to sell ready made structures to those who may wish to afford them. The original target customers were people short on time or work space, or who didn't want to make the investment in tools and equipment necessary to accomplish the level of performance REM's  provides.
In 1993, REM's RAILROAD MODELS introduced their first kit; an HO scale 40' Truss Rod Flat Car.  Over the next three years, Rem and Linda expanded the HO scale line into Narrow Gauge culminating with the release of the D&SNG Excursion Gondola Car. REM's is the only manufacturer of these kits and provides them to the D&SNG for sale in their depot gift shop.
In 1996, REM's RAILROAD MODELS joined with
Nick's Southwestern Art Co. and Light Locomotive Werks to form the Old Silverton Jail Pardners operating in the Original Old Town Jail in Silverton, Colorado. It was an interesting experience but it was sometimes difficult to determine whether Rem and Linda were Pardners or prisoners. So, in 1998 they climbed into their fifth-wheel and relocated to their childhood home in Michigan.
REM's Line of kits was expanded to include S-scale at the 1999 National Train Show and to O-scale at the 2000 show.   In the future they plan to "flesh out" the offerings in each scale as customers indicate an interest.  The shop is again in the back bedroom and Linda and Rem are often heard to ask,

"MAY WE BUILD ONE FOR YOU?"
